Kenya Simbas Secure Semi-Final Berth in 2025 Rugby Africa Cup with Narrow Victory Over Uganda

In a thrilling match at Nelson Mandela Stadium in Namboole, Uganda, the Kenya Simbas clinched a 32-24 win against the Uganda Rugby Cranes to advance to the semi-finals of the 2025 Rugby Africa Cup, keeping their 2027 World Cup aspirations alive. They will face Zimbabwe on 13 July 2025 at 4PM EAT.

First Half

Kenya struck first in the 20th minute when Griffin Chao scored a try after a dynamic move sparked by captain George Nyambua, though the conversion was missed. The Simbas extended their lead in the 34th minute with a try from Barry Robson Young, set up by Jone Kubu’s clever play to draw in defenders. Uganda hit back with a converted try by Aaron Ofoyrwoth, capitalizing on a line-out to close the gap. At halftime, Kenya led 12-7.

Second Half

The second half saw early drama as Kenya’s Patrick Sabatia was forced off in the 44th minute due to a head injury, with Ernest Obat Kuke stepping in. Uganda narrowed the score to 12-10 with a penalty kick. Kenya regained momentum in the 60th minute when Nyambua scored a converted try from a maul, followed by Chao’s second try, showcasing his speed and sharpness.

Uganda fought back with a try from Philip Wokoraj after a fluid team move and another from Byron Oketayot, who capitalized on a kick by winger Adrian Kisito. However, with the game on the line, Barry Young’s calm drop goal in the final moments sealed a 32-24 victory for Kenya.

The Simbas’ disciplined tactics, flair in attack, and standout performances from Chao, Young, and Nyambua secured their spot in the final four of the tournament.
