HISTORY MADE: Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe Shatters the Fabled 2-Hour Marathon Barrier in London

In what will forever be remembered as one of the greatest milestones in human athletic achievement, Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe has done the unthinkable. On Sunday at the 2026 London Marathon, the 30-year-old “Silent Assassin” shattered the fabled two-hour marathon barrier, crossing the finish line on The Mall in a staggering official world record time of 1 hour, 59 minutes, and 30 seconds.

Sawe didn’t just break the previous world record of 2:00:35. set by the late Kenyan hero Kelvin Kiptum at the 2023 Chicago Marathon, he completely obliterated it by 65 seconds. In doing so, he has officially etched his name in the annals of history as the first human being to run a sub-two-hour marathon in a legal, record-eligible race, surpassing even Eliud Kipchoge’s unofficial 1:59:40 exhibition run in Vienna.

A Tactical Masterclass

The race conditions in London were near perfect 11 degrees Celsius, sunny, with a gentle tailwind. A lead group that included heavyweights like Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo and Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha hit the halfway mark at 60:29. At that pace, a world record seemed possible, but a sub-two-hour finish still looked like a stretch.

However, Sawe turned the streets of London into his own personal playground in the second half of the race, running the final 13.1 miles in an unbelievable 59 minutes and 1 second.

When the final pacemakers dropped out, Sawe and Kejelcha dramatically surged ahead. The duo ran a blistering 13 minutes and 54 seconds for the 5-kilometer stretch between 30km and 35km. Entering the final mile along Birdcage Walk, the seasoned Sawe relied on his lethal finishing kick to finally break the Ethiopian debutant, surging ahead to claim his historic victory.

Kejelcha crossed the line in 1:59:41 to take second place making him the fastest debutant in history and the second man to ever break the two-hour mark while Uganda’s Kiplimo took third in a phenomenal 2:00:28.

“I am feeling good, I am so happy. It is a day to remember for me,” a jubilant Sawe said after the race. “I have made history today in London. For me, I have shown that nothing is impossible. It’s something that will remain in my mind forever. What happened today was not for me alone, but for everyone in London and the crowds that cheered me on.”

The Technology and Training Behind the Sub-Two Hour Run

The mechanics and economics of such a feat are just as fascinating as the athleticism. The shattering of the two-hour barrier firmly ushers in a brand-new era of sports science and shoe technology.

Sawe’s monumental achievement was aided by the latest super-shoe technology from Adidas. The Kenyan superstar was wearing the Adidas Adios Pro Evo 3 a revolutionary racing shoe that weighs a mere 97 grams (lighter than a newborn kitten) and retails for around £450 (approx. Ksh 75,000). Combined with precise carbohydrate fuelling from Maurten gels, Sawe was able to maintain peak energy levels when his competitors began to fade.

But technology alone doesn’t run the race; unimaginable grit does. Sawe’s coach, Claudio Berardelli, revealed the punishing training regimen that prepared the champion for this moment. In the six weeks leading up to London, Sawe averaged over 200 kilometers (125 miles) a week, with his peak mileage hitting a grueling 241 kilometers (150 miles) per week in the high altitudes of Kenya’s Rift Valley.

“In the 22 years I’ve been coaching in Kenya, I thought I’d seen pretty much everything,” Berardelli noted. “But then Sabastian started to show me something which I thought was almost impossible. He is a special one.”

A New Era for Kenyan Athletics

For years, scientists, analysts, and sports brands have debated whether a human being could officially conquer the 26.2 miles in under two hours without the artificial conditions of an exhibition setup. Sabastian Sawe has decisively answered that question, ensuring that the greatest milestone in modern athletics remains safely on Kenyan soil.

As the sports world absorbs the magnitude of this 1:59:30 run, the bar for the global marathon business has officially been raised. Sawe has proven that no Human is limited and records are truly meant to be broken.
