World Rugby Issues Stern Warning to Kenya Rugby Union Amid Leadership Turmoil

World Rugby has intervened in the ongoing leadership disputes within the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU), expressing serious concerns over the internal conflicts that have split its leadership. The global governing body has issued a strongly worded letter to KRU, highlighting governance issues that threaten the stability of rugby in Kenya.
The KRU is set to hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Friday, but the organization remains deeply divided. Chairman Alexander ‘Sasha’ Mutai was removed from his position in March by some board members who cited integrity concerns. Mutai, however, claims the accusations stem from resistance to his anti-corruption efforts.
As the AGM approaches, opposition to Mutai is reportedly intensifying, with efforts to permanently oust him.
World Rugby’s letter, signed by Chief of International Federation David Carrigy, noted that the organization has been closely monitoring the situation, including reports of governance and control failures discussed in the Kenyan Senate. The body expressed frustration over KRU’s failure to respond to two prior letters sent on April 24 and May 22, which sought clarification on plans to resolve the conflict.
World Rugby emphasized the need for a clear strategy to address the disputes, warning that continued instability could create a governance vacuum detrimental to Kenyan rugby, a key player in African and global rugby due to the strong performances of its national teams.
The letter urged KRU leadership to provide transparent and accurate information to stakeholders to ensure informed decision-making and protect the long-term integrity of the sport in Kenya.
Meanwhile, tensions within KRU have escalated, with secretary Ray Olendo proposing a new motion to remove Mutai at the AGM, alleging misappropriation of Ksh13.2 million through fraudulent invoices. Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has also called for an investigation into KRU’s operations and finances, further spotlighting the union’s challenges.
