Premier League Transfer Window Closes dur to the FIFA Club World Cup: Why and When It Reopens

The summer 2025 transfer window has temporarily shut, leaving clubs in a brief pause before business resumes. The window closed at 21:00 EAT on Tuesday, June 10, and will remain shut until Monday, June 16. But why the split window, and what does it mean for clubs?

Why Has the Transfer Window Closed?

This year’s transfer window is divided into two phases due to the FIFA Club World Cup, which kicks off on June 15 in the United States. To accommodate clubs participating in the tournament, FIFA allowed an early registration period from June 1 to June 10, enabling teams to finalize signings before the competition begins.

However, FIFA regulations limit the total duration of transfer windows in a calendar year to 16 weeks. To comply, the summer window had to be temporarily paused, ensuring that the second phase could run uninterrupted until the usual deadline.

When Will the Window Reopen?

The second phase of the transfer window reopens on Monday, June 16, allowing clubs to resume signings. Teams competing in the Club World Cup can register new players for the knockout rounds, while all other clubs will continue their summer recruitment.

The window will remain open until Monday, September 1, closing at 21:00 EAT—an earlier deadline compared to previous years, which typically ended at 02:00 EAT.

Notable Transfers Before the Pause

Several Premier League clubs took advantage of the early registration period:

  • Manchester United secured Matheus Cunha from Wolves.
  • Liverpool signed Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen.
  • Chelsea added striker Liam Delap and defender Mamadou Sarr and Essugo.
  • Manchester City strengthened their squad with Rayan Aït-Nouri from Wolves.

With the window set to reopen soon, expect more high-profile moves as clubs finalize their squads for the 2025/26 season.
