Harambee Stars Head Coach Engin Firat Resigns After AFCON Qualification Failure

Harambee Stars head coach Engin Firat has resigned just weeks after failing to secure Kenya’s qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. The Turkish coach faced mounting pressure from stakeholders and fans after missing out on a spot in the 35th edition of the tournament.

Kenya, aiming for their seventh appearance at the CAF-organized event, finished third in Group J behind Cameroon and Zimbabwe, with Namibia coming last. The team’s campaign started with a 0-0 draw against Zimbabwe, followed by a 2-1 victory over Namibia. However, consecutive defeats to Cameroon dashed their hopes. Despite ending with draws against Zimbabwe and Namibia, the team could not secure a qualifying spot.

The outcome sparked widespread debate, with former players and officials calling for Firat’s dismissal. Ex-Harambee Stars striker Elijah Onsika led the calls for Firat’s removal, expressing dissatisfaction with the coach’s performance and urging the FKF to take action.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen indicated that the government might stop funding Firat’s salary due to the team’s failure to qualify for AFCON. Following these comments, Firat announced his resignation, stating that he had terminated his contract and suggesting the FKF should make an official announcement.

Firat, who previously coached Moldova, leaves Harambee Stars with a record of seven wins, seven draws, and nine losses from 23 matches. His tenure included notable matches such as a 5-0 loss to Mali in a World Cup qualifier, a win against Rwanda, and a 4-0 victory over Malawi in the Four Nation tournament. However, the recent qualification setbacks overshadowed these moments.

Kenya’s future participation in major tournaments now hangs in the balance as the FKF searches for a new head coach to steer the team forward.
