Final Touches: Raila Odinga International Stadium Nears Completion Ahead of AFCON 2027

Nairobi’s sporting landscape is on the verge of a massive transformation as the Raila Odinga International Stadium at Jamhuri Grounds enters its final phase of construction. According to Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, the state-of-the-art, 60,000-seater facility is nearing completion, marking a crucial milestone in Kenya’s infrastructure preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Renamed in December 2025 to honor the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, the magnificent arena is already tipped to be the crown jewel of the tournament, expected to host either the opening or closing ceremony.
Construction Enters the Final Stretch
With the main structural framework completely erected, focus on the ground has shifted to outfitting the stadium for international broadcast and fan experience. Current site works are heavily concentrated on:
Seat Installation: Workers are currently fitting the stands with vibrant, modern seating, bringing the stadium’s massive capacity to life.
Tech & Broadcast Infrastructure: Final electrical and ICT fittings are being integrated to support seamless global broadcasting.
Interior Fit-Outs: Essential match-day systems, including massive display screens, public address (PA) systems, and high-powered floodlights, are approaching completion.
A Blend of Culture, Technology, and Sustainability
Visually, the stadium is a masterpiece that pays homage to Kenyan heritage while pushing the boundaries of modern sports engineering. The striking exterior façade is inspired by Kenya’s national emblem, prominently featuring the iconic shield and spears. Above the stands, the massive roof is supported by a highly sophisticated, computerized hydraulic tension cable system.
Beyond its visual appeal, the facility is setting a new standard for sustainable sports infrastructure in East Africa. To maintain a pristine playing surface year-round, the stadium incorporates an advanced water management system dedicated to pitch irrigation. This eco-friendly setup utilizes rainwater harvesting, storage, and recycling, significantly reducing the facility’s reliance on the municipal water supply.
Ready for the Global Stage
To meet the stringent requirements of modern football, the Raila Odinga International Stadium is equipped with premium, world-class amenities designed for players, officials, and fans alike. These include:
VAR-Enabled Suites: Fully equipped officiating rooms to support the Video Assistant Referee technology standard in CAF and FIFA tournaments.
Modern Changing Rooms: State-of-the-art facilities designed to provide optimal pre-match and post-match environments for elite athletes.
Retail Spaces: Commercial zones integrated into the stadium’s footprint to boost match-day revenue and enhance the fan experience.
As the final seats are bolted in and the lights are tested, the Raila Odinga International Stadium stands not just as a venue for AFCON 2027, but as a lasting legacy of Kenyan sporting ambition.
