Kenya Ramps Up Preparations for CHAN 2024 and AFCON 2027

Kenya’s preparations for the postponed 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) are progressing well, according to the Ministry of Sports. The CHAN tournament, co-hosted with Uganda and Tanzania, was rescheduled to August 2025 due to concerns about infrastructure readiness.
Following recommendations from CAF’s technical experts, the three nations have intensified efforts to meet international standards. In Kenya, upgrades are underway at Nyayo and Kasarani Stadia, alongside four training grounds.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya assured the Senate Committee on Labour and Social Welfare of the government’s commitment to timely completion of infrastructure. Sports Principal Secretary Peter Tum emphasized investments in sports facilities and youth academies, highlighting their role in talent development and international competitiveness.
The Senate committee, chaired by Senator Julius Murgor, met with ministry officials, including Youth Affairs PS Ismail Maalim. Meanwhile, Kenya has been drawn into a tough CHAN Group A alongside Morocco, Angola, DR Congo, and Zambia.
