Hussein Mohammed Leads Kenya’s CHAN 2024 Preparations

On January 9, 2025, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed expressed optimism about Kenya’s preparations for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN). He highlighted the Harambee Stars’ performance in the Mapinduzi Cup in Zanzibar, where they secured a 1-1 draw against Burkina Faso and a 2-0 victory over Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro Stars.

Hussein emphasized the importance of consistency and long-term planning to ensure strong performances at CHAN 2024 and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). He also mentioned the ongoing infrastructure upgrades at key venues like Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani and Nyayo National Stadium, which are crucial for hosting the tournament.

The FKF president called for patience and support from Kenyans as the team continues to work towards its goals. Kenya, alongside Uganda and Tanzania, will co-host the CHAN 2024 tournament in February this year.

The economic impact of hosting the tournament is significant. The government and private sector have invested heavily in upgrading infrastructure, with over Ksh 2.4 billion spent on renovating key venues like Kasarani Stadium and Nyayo National Stadium. These investments are expected to boost local businesses and create job opportunities, as thousands of visitors are anticipated to attend the tournament.

Moreover, the sponsorship deals and partnerships with local and international brands are crucial for funding the event and promoting it globally. The success of CHAN 2024 could also pave the way for future sporting events in Kenya, enhancing the country’s reputation as a capable host for international tournaments.
