Harambee Stars Drop in FIFA Rankings Amid East African Rivalry

The latest FIFA rankings, released on April 3, 2025, have brought mixed fortunes for East African football teams. Kenya’s Harambee Stars have dropped three places to 111th globally, marking their lowest position in six years. This decline comes after a challenging run in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where Kenya managed a 3-3 draw against Gambia but suffered a 2-1 defeat to Gabon.

Despite the setback, there is hope for improvement under new head coach Benni McCarthy, who took charge in March 2025. The Harambee Stars now rank 27th in Africa, trailing their East African neighbors Uganda and Tanzania.

East African Rankings: Uganda and Tanzania

Uganda’s national team, the Cranes, continues to lead the East African pack, holding 89th place globally. Their consistent performances in recent qualifiers have solidified their position as the region’s top team. Meanwhile, Tanzania’s Taifa Stars are ranked 107th globally, narrowly ahead of Kenya. Both teams have shown promise, with Uganda particularly eyeing a return to the Africa Cup of Nations.
