From Kitale to Celta Fortuna: Aldrine Kibet’s Historic Move to Spain and What It Means for Kenyan Football

Kenya’s football scene has scored a major win as one of its brightest young stars, Aldrine Kibet, completes a dream move to RC Celta Fortuna (Celta Vigo B Team), the reserve side of Spanish La Liga club RC Celta Vigo, on a free transfer valid until 2029. Nicknamed “Messi”, for his dribbling skills, he will join Celta Juvenil but start with Celta Fortuna. Celta Juvenil are the Under-19 team within the Celta Vigo Youth Academy System (Canteira Celeste). This move is more than just a personal milestone for the 19-year-old; it is a validation of Kenya’s growing football potential and the impact of government-led talent development programs like Talanta Hela.

A Journey from Kitale to Spain

Kibet rose to national prominence in 2023 during the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) games, where he starred for St. Anthony’s Boys Kitale. He was named MVP and top scorer, recording 25 goals and 27 assists. His dazzling performances caught the attention of local and international scouts, particularly after a breakout showing in the CECAFA U-20 Championship, where he netted a hat-trick that propelled Kenya to the AFCON U-20 qualifiers semifinals.

Later that year, Kibet joined Nastic Sports Academy in Tarragona, northeastern Spain. He earned MVP honors at the 2024 Valladolid International Cup, scoring six goals and providing three assists. His development at the academy has now culminated in a significant step up: signing with RC Celta Fortuna in Vigo, northwestern Spain—a move that could serve as his launchpad to top-flight football in La Liga.

Transfer Details

Contrary to erroneous reports in some Kenyan sports news outlets, Kibet was not signed for €6 million. His move to RC Celta Fortuna was on a free transfer, which is standard for players coming from academies.

The Structure: RC Celta Fortuna and the Spanish Football Pyramid

RC Celta Fortuna plays in the Primera Federación, Spain’s third-tier professional league. It sits two levels below La Liga and directly feeds into Celta Vigo’s senior team. This league was established in 2022 to replace the chaotic Segunda B, and it is home to several “B teams” of top La Liga clubs, including Real Madrid Castilla, Athletic Bilbao B, and Osasuna B.

The reserve team competes in Group 1 of the league and plays most of its matches at the 4,500-capacity Municipal de Barreiro Stadium, occasionally sharing the Estadio Balaídos (24,000 capacity) with the senior team.

Financials: Humble Start with High Potential

In the Primera Federación, players earn a minimum monthly salary of €1,286 (approx. KES 193,000), typically paid in 14 installments annually. If Kibet eventually breaks into the Celta Vigo senior squad, his earnings could rise dramatically, with La Liga salaries starting at approximately €182,000 per year (around Ksh 27 million).

Pathway to La Liga: A Mountain to Climb

Kibet’s registration with RC Celta Fortuna places him within reach of La Liga, but the road ahead is steep. Spanish top-tier clubs are limited to five non-EU players in their squads, and only three can be fielded on matchday. As a Kenyan, Kibet will not qualify for Spanish citizenship until 2033, after 10 years of residence.

Fortunately for him, Celta Vigo currently has only one non-EU player, Ghanaian defender Joseph Aidoo, which leaves four available slots. This opens a window of opportunity, albeit one that will demand exceptional performance, discipline, and adaptability.

The Talanta Hela Factor: Proof of Concept

The Talanta Hela initiative, launched by former Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba, was instrumental in Kibet’s journey. The program identified and nurtured young talents, facilitating Kibet’s move to Nastic Sports Academy through scholarships and structured development. Namwamba’s vision of “Identify, Nurture, Monetize” has proven effective, with Kibet and teammate Amos Wanjala (set to join Spanish La Liga’s Elche CF) as success stories. Namwamba celebrated their achievements, calling himself the “happiest Dad” and highlighting the program’s impact on Kenyan football.

A Nation’s Hope Abroad

Kibet’s move is a watershed moment for Kenyan football. It proves that with the right support, infrastructure, and visibility, Kenyan players can access some of the world’s best football environments. For Kibet, the challenge is now to stay focused and prove himself worthy of La Liga.

For the rest of the country, this is a rallying call: to continue investing in youth development, uphold media integrity, and support programs like Talanta Hela that are building bridges to international success.
