Kenya Loses CHAN Hosting Rights to Rwanda Due to Unfinished Stadiums

Kenya has lost its hosting rights for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2025 to Rwanda due to incomplete stadium renovations. Initially set to co-host the tournament in February 2025 with Tanzania and Uganda, Kenya failed to meet the required standards in time.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) selected Rwanda to replace Kenya as a co-host nation alongside Uganda and Tanzania. The key reason for this decision was Kenya’s inability to complete the renovations of Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, and Nyayo Stadium by the December 31 deadline. According to a CAF official, Nyayo Stadium was only 10% complete, while Kasarani Stadium was 30% ready during a recent inspection.
With the Amahoro Stadium in Rwanda fully prepared, the country secured the hosting rights. Meanwhile, Uganda’s Mandela National Stadium and Tanzania’s Benjamin Mkapa Stadium had already met CAF standards and were ready for the tournament.
Kenya’s delayed preparations have led to Rwanda stepping in to ensure the successful co-hosting of CHAN 2025. This development highlights the importance of timely infrastructure readiness in hosting major sporting events.
