CAF Boosts WAFCON Prize Money as Morocco Hosts 2024 Tournament

The 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), scheduled in Morocco from today, July 5 to 26, will see the winner take home USD 1,000,000 (Ksh 1.4 million), with the runner-up earning USD 500,000. The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) has doubled the winner’s prize and increased the tournament’s total prize pool by 45%.
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe emphasized the federation’s commitment to advancing women’s football in Africa, noting that the prize money increase aims to improve salaries for players, coaches, and staff. He highlighted the rising quality of African women’s football and anticipated a surge in fans, viewers, and sponsors for the 2024 tournament, predicting it will be a major success.This year’s WAFCON marks the first without a debutant team, as all participating nations have prior experience. Host nation Morocco, the Atlas Lionesses, seeks redemption after losing the 2022 final to South Africa. Meanwhile, defending champions Banyana Banyana, led by coach Desiree Ellis, aim to retain their title. Nigeria, nine-time champions, are determined to reclaim dominance after a semifinal exit in 2022.
