Gor Mahia Claim Bragging Rights and Title Control With 1-0 Win Over AFC Leopards in the 99th Mashemeji Derby

The stakes couldn’t have been higher, and in the end, it was Gor Mahia who seized the moment. In a tense, tactical, and fiercely contested 99th Mashemeji Derby, K’Ogalo edged out their eternal rivals AFC Leopards 1-0 at a packed Nyayo Stadium on Sunday, firmly taking control of the 2025-26 SportPesa Premier League title race.

A late second-half strike from Gor Mahia captain Alpha Onyango was the difference in a match where both sides knew that victory was crucial to their championship credentials. With just six matches left heading into the derby, the win opens up a commanding six-point gap for Gor Mahia at the summit of the league table.

K’Ogalo now sit comfortably at the top with 61 points, leaving Ingwe in second place on 55 points with only five matches remaining in the season.

A Game of Tactical Patience and Missed Chances

The match began with typical derby caution. AFC Leopards opted to control the tempo early on, circulating the ball patiently across their back three of captain Kayci Odhiambo, Brian Odhiambo, and Samwel Mbanja. Gor Mahia, however, looked dangerous on the counter, relying on the quick transitions of Paul Ochuoga, Sharif Musa, and Ebenezer Adukwaw.

It was Gor Mahia who created the lion’s share of opportunities in the opening 45 minutes. In the 19th minute, Adukwaw found himself unmarked in the box courtesy of a pinpoint pass from Onyango, but Leopards’ goalkeeper Humphrey Katasi pulled off a brilliant save, tipping the ball over the bar.

Katasi proved to be Ingwe’s savior once again just two minutes later, using his feet to deny striker Patrick Essombe in a dramatic one-on-one situation. Gor came agonizingly close to breaking the deadlock in the 28th minute when Ochuoga’s deflected cross struck the post, but Essombe failed to bury the rebound.

Despite Gor Mahia’s sustained pressure and a few near misses—including an attempted backheel flick from Essombe just before the break—the teams went into the dressing rooms deadlocked at 0-0.

Onyango Breaks the Deadlock

The second half saw AFC Leopards make swift changes, bringing on Kelly Madada and Hassan Beja to replace Bonface Munyendo and Ronald Sichenje. The substitutions injected much-needed energy into Ingwe’s play, allowing them to gain a foothold in the match and pose a greater attacking threat.

A cagey period followed, highlighted by a controversial moment in the 77th minute when Leopards furiously appealed for a penalty. Substitute Victor Omune’s effort appeared to strike the hand of Gor’s Frank Odhiambo, but the referee waved play on, much to the frustration of the Leopards faithful.

Just as the match looked destined for a goalless draw, Gor Mahia found their breakthrough. In the 82nd minute, captain Alpha Onyango capitalized on a half-cleared corner, pouncing from close range after being perfectly set up by Onyona. The goal sent the green side of Nyayo Stadium into a frenzy and completely deflated the Leopards’ resilient defense.

Title Race Tilted

With the final whistle, Gor Mahia not only secured the ultimate bragging rights in Kenyan football’s biggest fixture but also dealt a massive blow to AFC Leopards’ title aspirations. With a six-point cushion and only five matches left to play, the SportPesa Premier League trophy is now K’Ogalo’s to lose.

For AFC Leopards, it’s a bitter pill to swallow. They must now regroup and hope for an unlikely slip-up from their archrivals if they are to have any chance of reclaiming the top spot before the season ends.
