McCarthy Rings Changes: Harambee Stars Overhauled After Friendly Setback

Coach Benni McCarthy has made swift changes to the Harambee Stars squad following a disappointing behind-closed-doors friendly match against a select team of FKF Premier League players. The match, held at Kasarani Annex, ended in a 2-1 defeat for the national side, prompting McCarthy to rethink his lineup ahead of the upcoming CECAFA Four Nations Championship and the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Midfielder Marvin Nabwire, who impressed while playing for the opposing team, earned a late call-up to the squad. His standout performance caught the attention of the coaching staff, leading to his inclusion despite not being part of the initial CHAN list.
In contrast, five players were dropped from the camp: Brian Opondo (Tusker FC), Kelly Madada (AFC Leopards), Keith Imbali (Shabana FC), Yakeen Muteheli (Ulinzi Stars), and Staphod Odhiambo (Ulinzi Stars). While no official reasons were given, their underwhelming display in the friendly likely influenced the decision.
McCarthy emphasized that every player must prove their worth, signaling a merit-based approach to squad selection. With the CECAFA tournament kicking off soon in Arusha, Tanzania, and CHAN looming, these adjustments reflect the coach’s commitment to building a competitive and resilient team.
