Kenya Shujaa Sets Sights on Top Rankings After Strong Cape Town 7s Performance

Kevin Wekesa, a standout player for Kenya’s Shujaa, is leveraging the team’s performance at the Cape Town 7s as a stepping stone to climb the HSBC Sevens Series rankings. The team showcased an improved form, finishing 7th with a commanding 32-17 win over Great Britain, a notable improvement from their 10th-place finish in Dubai.

The Shujaa squad, under coach Kevin Wambua, has adopted a blend of youthful talent and experienced players, which Wekesa believes is fostering growth and cohesion. He expressed confidence in the team’s upward trajectory, noting that as young players gain experience, they will significantly contribute to the team’s success.

Despite their 26-14 loss to Argentina in the 5th-place playoff, the Cape Town campaign reflected a mix of promise and areas for improvement. Shujaa’s performance in the group stages highlighted their potential, with a hard-fought 19-12 victory over Australia and a narrow 14-7 defeat to Spain, underlining the need for greater consistency.

With the World Rugby Sevens Series resuming in January 2025, Shujaa’s next challenge will be in Perth, Australia, where they aim to secure a top-eight finish and maintain their place among the elite teams. Wekesa remains optimistic, emphasizing the team’s growing unity and potential for success in the competitive series.
