Construction and Upgrades Move Forward for CHAN 2025 at Kasarani and Nyayo

The state of Kasarani Stadium

Renovations at Kasarani Stadium are ongoing with the contractor working around the clock to prepare the facility for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

Kenya, alongside neighbors Uganda and Tanzania, secured the rights to co-host this continental tournament, which is exclusively for players participating in their national league competitions.

While Uganda and Tanzania already possess CAF-approved stadiums, Kenya faced a lack of suitable facilities. As a result, the government has shut down Kasarani and Nyayo Stadiums for upgrades and initiated the construction of a new Talanta City.

The grass is almost fully done, as the metal framework for the canopy has been fully constructed around the stadium, with works completed in the VIP section. Additionally, new floodlights (ideal for night matched) recommended by CAF are being installed, with several already attached to the roofing structures ahead of the canopy’s completion.

The installation of seats is well underway, with only a few sections in the lower and upper levels remaining. All seats, unlike previous installations, will feature back rests.

Public washrooms have been renovated and are ready for use by fans attending the tournament.

Former Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports Cabinet Secretary, Kipchumba Murkomen had previously highlighted that the dressing rooms are complete and ready for use.

The state of Nyayo Stadium

Nyayo Stadium has been approved to host the CHAN tournament following a thorough inspection by a CAF team yesterday, 8 Jan 2025, which deemed the stadium ready.

The CAF delegation, led by Director of Competitions Samson Adamu, also toured Kirigiti Stadium in Kiambu County, Police Sacco Stadium in South C, and Ulinzi Sports Complex in Lang’ata, which will serve as training grounds for the teams.

So far so good, both stadiums seem to be on the right track, ready to host an electrifying African Nations Championship 2024 (CHAN 2024)
