As we get closer and closer to the Africa Cup of Nations 2027 (AFCON 2027), the East African Hosts (Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania) are preparing adequately, incuding security and safety matters. A recent workshop held in Nairobi, where representatives from the three countries along with counter-terrorism experts and security agencies, gathered to discuss security measures for the upcoming AFCON 2027. Organized by the National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC) in collaboration with the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT), the workshop aimed to ensure robust security for the event.

Alex Tumushabe, Director of Planning and Policy at Uganda’s National Counter-Terrorism Centre, emphasized the importance of a united front to address terrorism threats and promote social cohesion through sports. The workshop highlighted the vulnerability of large gatherings to violent extremism and discussed the role of sports in promoting inclusivity and countering radicalization.

Participants shared insights, challenges, and recommendations to enhance security at major events. Richard Apau from the African Union Counter-Terrorism Centre presented alarming statistics on terrorist attacks, underscoring the need for enhanced security measures. Kibiego Kigen, Director of NCTC, stressed the importance of multisectoral collaboration to bolster security for AFCON 2027 and create peaceful environments during major sporting events.

The Director explained to the participants that the workshop aimed to establish a foundation for capacity building, raise awareness on Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism, and strengthen multisectoral collaboration to improve the security of major sporting events in the region, including the upcoming AFCON 2027.
