Is It Talent or Just a Last Name? A Look at the Antetokounmpos

Today, I’m taking a look at a topic that’s becoming more and more visible in the NBA: nepotism. When we talk about “nepo babies” in the sports world, there’s one family that I believe stands out above the rest—the Antetokounmpos.
Now, let me be clear: Giannis Antetokounmpo is a phenomenal, world-class talent who has earned every bit of his success. But I have to question whether his brothers would have the same careers without their famous last name.
Let’s look at the evidence. The oldest brother, Thanasis, was just re-signed by the Milwaukee Bucks. This is despite him averaging only 2.4 points over 7.7 minutes per game across five seasons with the team. On merit alone, that’s a tough contract to justify.
But it gets even more blatant. The youngest brother, Alex, has just been given a two-way contract by the very same team. What were his stats in the Greek League that earned him this spot? A staggering 0.6 points per game. With his signing, the Bucks have now become the first team in NBA history to have three brothers on their roster.
The only brother not wearing a Bucks jersey is Kostas, who has previously played for the Mavericks and Lakers. Honestly, based on how things are going, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him join the family reunion in Milwaukee very soon.
