Nairobi United Heartbreak: Late Ben Yedder Strike Sinks ‘Naibois’ in CAF Confederation Cup Thriller

It was a harsh lesson in continental football for Nairobi United on Sunday evening as Moroccan giants Wydad AC snatched a 1-0 victory at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. A late goal from substitute Wissam Ben Yedder denied the hosts their first-ever point in the CAF Confederation Cup group stages, leaving the Kenyan Premier League side bottom of Group B.

A Valiant Defensive Display

Coming into the match off the back of a tough domestic run, including a recent 3-1 loss to APS Bomet, Nairobi United (popularly known as Naibois) looked determined to restore pride. Technical Director Salim Ali set up a disciplined side that frustrated the three-time African champions for nearly 90 minutes.

Goalkeeper Kevin Oduor was in inspired form, pulling off crucial saves to deny Wydad’s Nordin Amrabat and Hakim Ziyech in the first half. The defensive pairing of Steve Biko and Brian Magare worked tirelessly to contain the Moroccan attack, while new signing Wang’aya showed flashes of promise in midfield, looking to settle into the squad.

The Turning Point

The deadlock was finally broken in the 89th minute. Just as Nairobi United looked set to secure a historic draw, a lapse in concentration allowed Wydad’s Walid Nassi to slip through. His delivery found French forward Wissam Ben Yedder, who made no mistake from close range, silencing the home crowd.

To compound the misery, defender Steve Biko was shown a straight red card in stoppage time for a last-man challenge, ruling him out of the final group fixture.

“We Matched Them”

Despite the loss, Coach Salim Ali remained defiant, praising his team’s character against one of Africa’s most decorated clubs.

“We really played well and matched our opponents. You couldn’t even believe we were facing a giant… conceding a late goal came as a big disadvantage to us since we put in a lot of effort,” Ali told reporters post-match.

What This Means for Nairobi United

The result leaves Nairobi United winless with 0 points from five matches in Group B. With their quarter-final hopes already extinguished, they now have one final continental assignment: an away trip to DR Congo to face AS Maniema next Sunday.

Group B Standings (Current):

  1. Wydad AC – Qualified
  2. AS Maniema – 9 pts
  3. Azam FC – 6 pts
  4. Nairobi United – 0 pts

Domestic Focus Returns

While the continental journey has been a “baptism of fire,” Nairobi United must now pivot back to the FKF Premier League. Currently sitting 10th on the log with 25 points, the team will be eager to arrest their recent slump and climb back into the top half of the table.

Fans will be watching closely to see if the experience gained against heavyweights like Wydad and Azam FC can translate into domestic dominance for the remainder of the 2025/26 season.
