Kenyan Trio Shines: Kipyegon, Wanyonyi, and Chebet Nominated for World Athletics Track Athlete of the Year

In a remarkable showcase of Kenya’s enduring dominance in middle and long-distance running, three of the nation’s top athletes: Faith Kipyegon, Emmanuel Wanyonyi, and Beatrice Chebet have been shortlisted for the prestigious 2025 World Athletics Track Athlete of the Year awards.
The nominations highlight the exceptional performances at the Tokyo World Athletics Championships and throughout the season, positioning Kenya as a powerhouse in the global track scene. With five nominees in each category for both men and women, the selection process now advances to public and expert voting, with finalists to be revealed soon.
Faith Kipyegon, the undisputed queen of the 1500m, continues to rewrite history with her nomination in the women’s category. The 31-year-old defended her world title in the 1500m in Tokyo, marking her fourth consecutive gold in the event, while also securing silver in the 5000m. Adding to her legacy, Kipyegon shattered the world record in the 1500m earlier this year, clocking an astonishing 3:49.04, a time that underscores her unparalleled blend of speed, endurance, and tactical brilliance. Her nomination is a testament to a season of consistent excellence that has inspired a new generation of Kenyan runners.
Beatrice Chebet’s meteoric rise complements Kipyegon’s mastery, earning her a spot alongside the veteran in the women’s field. The 24-year-old claimed a historic double gold in Tokyo, triumphing in both the 5000m and 10,000m events, and etched her name in the record books by setting a new world record in the 5000m with a blistering 14:13.56. Meanwhile, Emmanuel Wanyonyi, in the men’s category, dominated the 800m with world championship gold and Diamond League supremacy, producing four of the season’s top six performances. As Kenya rallies behind its stars, the awards gala promises to celebrate not just individual triumphs but the nation’s unyielding athletic spirit.
