Kenya Boosts Athlete Rewards After Kipyegon and Chebet’s World Record Feats

Following exceptional performances by Faith Kipyegon and Beatrice Chebet at the Prefontaine Classic, the Kenyan government has introduced an enhanced prize money scheme and comprehensive support for its athletes.

Kipyegon smashed her own 1500m world record with a time of 3:48.68, while Chebet became the first woman to run the 5000m under 14 minutes, clocking 13:58.06.

On Tuesday, Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, Hon. Salim Mvurya, announced the updated reward system during a visit by Kipyegon and Chebet to Talanta Plaza. The revised scheme, approved by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission in April 2025, aligns with the updated National Sports Policy. It includes increased financial rewards, access to advanced training facilities, wellness and mental health programs, and improved logistical support for international competitions.

“Our athletes elevate Kenya’s global standing with their excellence. We’re not just celebrating them; we’re investing in their future,” Mvurya stated.

Under the new structure, Olympic and Paralympic gold medalists will receive Ksh 3 million (up from Ksh 750,000), silver medalists Ksh 2 million (from Ksh 500,000), and bronze medalists Ksh 1 million (from Ksh 350,000).

For Commonwealth Games, gold medalists will earn Ksh 2.5 million (up from Ksh 500,000), silver Ksh 1.5 million (from Ksh 300,000), and bronze Ksh 1 million (from Ksh 200,000).

Additionally, the government has allocated Ksh 70 million to honor previously unrecognized high-performing athletes, addressing past oversights and promoting fairness.

“This initiative reflects justice, dignity, and recognition for Kenyan athletes’ sacrifices,” Mvurya said.

Beyond financial incentives, the Ministry will expand medical coverage, offer scholarships, support post-career transitions, and strengthen partnerships with sports federations to ensure transparency and accountability.
