Harambee Stars Make History with CHAN 2024 Debut Win Over DR Congo

In a moment that will be etched into Kenya’s football folklore, Harambee Stars kicked off their maiden appearance at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) with a thrilling 1–0 victory over tournament heavyweights DR Congo at a packed Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
Midfield maestro Austin Odhiambo delivered the decisive blow in the 47th minute, curling a left-footed strike past the Congolese keeper after a slick team build-up. The goal sent the stadium into raptures, with fans erupting in celebration as Kenya claimed all three points in Group A.
Head coach Benni McCarthy, in his first major tournament with Kenya, orchestrated a disciplined and dynamic performance. Despite losing key players like Emmanuel Osoro to overseas transfers before the tournament, McCarthy’s side showed grit and cohesion, frustrating a DR Congo team known for its CHAN pedigree.
Goalkeeper Bryne Odhiambo Omondi stood tall between the posts, barely troubled as Kenya’s backline, led by skipper Aboud Omar, absorbed pressure and shut down Congo’s attacking threats. Substitutes Marvin Nabwire and Boniface Muchiri added fresh legs late on to preserve the lead.
President William Ruto was among the dignitaries in attendance, having earlier met the team and pledged support. His rallying cry—“Stars Must Win!”—was answered emphatically. The win sparked celebrations across the country, with leaders and fans flooding social media to hail the team’s performance. He also promised the national team Ksh 60m if they reach the quarterfinal, Ksh 70m if they reach the semis, and Ksh 600 million if they win the tournament. Each player will also receive Ksh 1 million for every win and Ksh 500k for every draw.
Kenya now turns its attention to Thursday’s clash against Angola, while DR Congo will seek redemption against Morocco. With momentum on their side and belief surging, Harambee Stars have announced their arrival on the continental stage.
