The Power Principle: Why Omanyala is Focusing on Strength, Not Weight Loss

Africa’s fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala, has dismissed suggestions that he should lose weight, explaining that his muscular physique is a key component of his success and is supported by scientific principles.
In a recent interview, Omanyala stated that sprinting is fundamentally about physics. He referenced Newton’s Third Law of Motion, explaining that the more force a sprinter applies to the ground, the greater the forward propulsion they receive. He argues that his strength, which gives him a “ripped” rather than “big” build, is essential for generating this explosive power.
Omanyala noted that for sprinters like him from Western Kenya, intense gym work naturally results in a muscular frame. He also shared that a past attempt to reduce his weight had a negative impact on his performance, reinforcing his decision to stick with what has proven effective.
Sports science supports his view, prioritizing a high strength-to-weight ratio over low overall weight. Powerful muscles are crucial for the rapid force development needed for acceleration. Omanyala, known for his excellent starts, says he is now focused on improving other areas of his race.
He also commented on the rising tide of talent in African sprinting, mentioning athletes from Botswana, South Africa, and Nigeria. He welcomes the increased competition, seeing it as a “wake-up call” that pushes him to improve.
As he prepares for the 2026 season, Omanyala has reunited with his former coach, Duncan Ayiemba.
