Kenyan Duo Sawe and Wanjiru Conquer Berlin Marathon in Historic Double Victory

September 21, 2025 will be remembered in Kenya’s athletic history as Sabastian Sawe and Rosemary Wanjiru delivered a stunning double triumph at the 51st edition of the BMW Berlin Marathon, reaffirming Kenya’s dominance on the global road racing stage.
Sawe’s Solo Surge to Glory
Sabastian Sawe, 29, produced a masterclass in endurance and pacing, storming to victory in the men’s race with a world-leading time of 2:02:16. Running solo for the final 17 kilometers, Sawe’s performance placed him among the top 10 fastest marathoners in history, just shy of the late Kelvin Kiptum’s world record of 2:00:35.
This win marks Sawe’s third consecutive marathon victory, following his 2024 debut in Valencia and his 2025 London Marathon triumph. His blistering pace early on passing 10km in 28:26 left defending champion Milkesa Mengesha trailing and eventually dropping out before the 30km mark.
Sawe’s reward? Over KSh9 million in prize money and bonuses, including a €30,000 payout for finishing under 2:02:30.
Wanjiru’s Grit Seals Women’s Title
In the women’s race, Rosemary Wanjiru, 30, showcased tactical brilliance and resilience. After surging ahead at the 25km mark, she held off a late charge from Ethiopia’s Dera Dida to win in 2:21:05, becoming the first Kenyan woman to win Berlin since 2018.
Wanjiru, who debuted in Berlin in 2022 and won the Tokyo Marathon in 2023, now adds another major title to her growing legacy. Her victory came despite warmer-than-usual conditions and a tense final kilometer, where she dug deep to preserve a narrow three-second lead.
National Pride and Global Impact
President William Ruto led the celebrations, hailing the duo’s achievements as a tribute to Kenya’s rich marathon heritage and the late Kelvin Kiptum. “Golden glory from our indomitable Sabastian Sawe! Hongera… a triumph that crowns you with greatness,” he posted on X.
With Ethiopia and Japan rounding out the podiums, Kenya’s clean sweep in Berlin sends a powerful message ahead of the fall marathon season. Sawe and Wanjiru’s victories not only inspire a new generation of runners but also elevate Kenya’s brand in global athletics.
