Kenyan Government Outlines Nyayo Stadium Enhancements for AFCON 2027

Kenya’s Sports Cabinet Secretary, Salim Mvurya, unveiled plans to upgrade Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi to meet global standards in preparation for co-hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
The announcement follows recent renovations to the stadium for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which Kenya is also co-hosting this August. Mvurya, speaking at a Harambee Stars pre-CHAN press conference on July 9 at the Stadion Hotel in Kasarani, highlighted that the upgrades are part of a broader effort to position Kenya as a leading sports hub in Africa.
Post-CHAN Upgrades to Elevate Nyayo Stadium
The iconic Nyayo National Stadium, a key venue for CHAN 2024, will undergo further improvements after the tournament. A significant addition will be a canopy installation to enhance the facility’s international standing.
Mvurya stated, “Once CHAN is complete, we will begin installing a canopy at Nyayo National Stadium to elevate it to an international-class facility. Our infrastructure upgrades will continue beyond CHAN.”
These developments align with Kenya’s long-term vision for AFCON 2027, aiming to showcase both its sporting talent and its capacity to host major continental events. The government also plans to upgrade additional sports facilities across the country to support this ambition.
